Romeo and Juliet

So here's what I learnt about Romeo and Juliet:
Number one, it's a tragedy where everybody dies. Basically the story goes along the line that this guy Romeo goes to this ball hosted by his family's enemies and falls in love with the girl. Love at first sight indeed. He even forgets about his old girlfriend who he was moping about when he arrived at the ball. He then proceeds to woo and marry this girl, Juliet, in secret with neither of their families knowledge. Then they discover that Juliet's family is arranging a marriage for her, and Romeo gets run out of town for murder. They then attempt to concoct a plan to reconcile their families and live the rest of their lives in peace. Unfortunately it goes horribly wrong, with Romeo not reading his messages (Snail-Mail for the win!) and committing suicide while thinking that Juliet is dead. Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead next her so she commits suicide as well. The families learn from this tragedy and end the feud. It's a great story, and one you should definitely read, although it's not quite my cup of tea... |
And here's what I learnt about Hamlet:
Again, it's a tragedy where everyone dies. The story goes along the line of Hamlet, the prince of Denmark comes home to his dad's funeral, and discovers his mother has already re-married his uncle, and that his uncle has crowned himself, despite Hamlet being the heir. Hamlet suspects foul play which is confirmed when he chats to his father's ghost and enacts a play to trap his uncle. He then feigns madness and kills a few people by accident. He is banished to England to be executed, but he discovers the plot and has his school friends executed instead. He then travels back home intent on vengeance as his girlfriend is dead. He gets in a fight with his girlfriends brother and kills him, while his mother, thinking this is good news drinks a poisoned toast and dies... Enraged he then learns that he is dying as he has been poisoned by the sword, and he then stabs his uncle and makes him drink poison as well. He then names the heir to the throne and dies. What a happy ending! I enjoyed this play a lot more! |
